The traditional methods of harvesting most fruits (pears, apples, kiwi, and citrics) and vegetables either in plastic bins or wooden crates, although superior to thone employing cases, have not only some economic drawbacks but also ecological and physical labor disadvantages.
Both bins and crates, independently of the fact that they are distributed on the ground along the rows before harvesting or mounted on carriages, are usually placed at some distance, sometimes considerable from the products to be harvested.
This implies that a considerable amount of time and effort is wasted by workers in trasporting the baskets or cases by hand to the location of the bins or crates.
Furthermore, employing a tractor to pull the crates or bins during harvest implies making use of a specialized operator each time the crates have to be moved, dealing with the wear and tear of the machine, fuel consumption etc. not to mention the pollution (noise, fumes) which affects the harvest crew.
Facing these numerous drawbacks which in the span of a working day have a relevant importance we have devised the FOR-BIN, a carriage for one bin only. It has a low elevation from the ground, it is not cumbersome, inexpensive, and particularly manageable and easy to move. Our FOR-BIN therefore is:
a) extremely versatile, it can be adapted to almost all types of installations;
b) can be moved manually (transportation and unloading) even by one person only and no more than two are required when the ground is not flat;
c) remarkably pratical since it can easily be placed in the ideal spot allowing the fastet harvesting in the most efficient and comfortable way especially when open bottom cases are employed, held by a support mounted on the edge of the bin.
The FOR-BIN system significantly reduces the cost of harvesting (25% to 30%) saving effort and avoiding the pollution related to the use of a tractor.
